Phase one of the Democrats’ long-awaited plans to finally come after your guns is completed, and now phase two is kicking off with powerful gun control lobbyists pulling out all stops in order to convince enough senators to fall in line.
According to The Hill, on the heels of the passage of H.R. 8, a bill that will require FBI background checks for the private transfer or sale of firearms between law-abiding gun owners and another section that expands the time that the feds have to conduct the background checks, from three to 10 days, all eyes are on the Senate.
That’s because it will take 60 votes in the upper chamber to pass the bill onto President Joe Biden’s desk and with a 50-50 Senate split between the party, that means 10 Republicans will need to be convinced that voting in favor of H.R. 8 is the politically sound move.
With Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer waiting in gleeful anticipation to pass the bill through the Senate and with similar statements from the Biden administration, make no mistake — there will be some serious horse-trading taking place over the next few days.
“We have a slim gun violence prevention majority, but we have the majority, which we know includes eight Republicans,” said Brian Lemek, executive director of Brady PAC.
Lemek was referring to the eight Republicans in the House who voted in favor of the bill. That’s still a long cry from securing eight, or the required ten in the Senate to vote the same way. But with players like Sen. Mitt Romney, Sen. Ben Sasse and others who can afford — and are expected — to break ranks with the party, it’s not a stretch to presume that Democrats just about have this in the bag.
“The legislative graveyard is over,” Schumer told reporters. “H.R. 8 will be on the floor of the Senate, and we will see where everybody stands.”
Let’s just get this out of the way real quick — the bill in no way, shape or form will make even the slightest dent in controlling what Democrats love to call “gun violence.” What they won’t admit — because it’s not woke — is that a majority of so-called “gun violence” stems from Democrat-led cities like Chicago, Oakland, St. Louis and other cities that have crisis-level gang violence problems.
Gangbangers do not give a single rip about background checks or how long it takes for the FBI to process a firearms background check. Why? Because they buy their guns from other bad guys, who also don’t care.
Do you think Congress will pass gun control laws in Biden’s first year?
It’s really that simple.
But Democrats have an opportunity to take another legislative victory lap if they’re able to pass the bill into law and will undoubtedly play the narrative in the media that they just took a massive step toward curbing America’s “gun violence” problem with “commonsense gun control” legislation.
It’s all a sham. It’s all for show. But the serious consequences will absolutely impact law-abiding, American gun owners, as H.R. 8 is clear encroachment on our Second Amendment rights, to say the very least.
