Gov. Andrew Cuomo doesn’t appear to be on the verge of catching any breaks anytime soon.
According to the New York Post, Cuomo, on the heels of a very nasty nursing home death count related to the COVID-19 pandemic and no less than three women who have accused him of various forms of sexual harassment, is so far underwater on his approval ratings that he’s all but done, at least in the sense that he’ll probably not be able to run a successful re-election campaign.
By “underwater,” I mean that as of Tuesday, Cuomo only garnered a 38 percent approval rating against a 48 percent disapproval rating. Ask anyone in politics and they’ll tell you that Cuomo’s political career is on its proverbial death bed, no question.
What makes this particular situation even more fascinating is that Cuomo, who actually won an International Emmy for his COVID-19 briefings last year that were repeatedly fawned over by the mainstream media, was rolling strong with a staggering 71 percent approval rating, overall, for his handling of the pandemic.
The numbers at that time all but guaranteed that he would cruise into a fourth term in office, short of something like, oh, say, multiple sexual harassment claims. And here we are.
On the subject of re-election, a whopping 64 percent of voters, according to an Emerson poll, believe that Cuomo should not be elected to that fourth term next year, which if that number holds anywhere close to that as the months tick by, he might as well throw in the towel as soon as possible and put himself out of his own misery.
Republican challengers and mark my words, plenty of Democratic primary challengers will be lining up and chomping at the bit to run the most devastating campaign ads possible against him should he make the foolish decision to throw his name in the hat anyway — which is not out of the question, given how narcissistic and ego-driven he truly is.
Tossing a little more gas on the Cuomo fire, as it stands right now, 45 percent of voters believe he should resign from the governor’s mansion right now — and that poll was only concerning the nursing home scandal, which, in a strange turn of events, was mostly swept under the rug on the count of multiple women coming out this past week accusing him of sexual harassment.
Sleazy, scandal-ridden politicians aren’t uncommon, but Cuomo is certainly claiming his spot at the top of the list of career-ending scandals.
On Wednesday, Cuomo appeared for the first time on camera in over a week to provide a COVID-19 update, but he also addressed the developments in the sexual harassment scandal, apologizing profusely for making anyone who ever worked with him “uncomfortable.”
Reporters asked him repeatedly whether or not he was considering resigning, to which he bluntly answered, “no,” proclaiming that he would carry out the duties of the governor as elected by the people of New York.
I bet those voters are experiencing some intense buyer’s remorse right about now.
